Most towing is performed by lifting the axle. These forks are designed for that purpose but can be used in many other ways. When lifting the axle make sure that the forks are positioned as close as possible to the U-bolts. This to avoid a sliding effect in turns. Bottom and right side photos shows how the 3.25″ tall fork is lifting behind the spring hangers. This method allows the operator to reduce stinger extension to effect a reduced rear axle weight. Safety chains should always be used to prevent the towed vehicle from falling off. Make sure the chains are correctly attached and have no defects.
Attend any of the towing schools available nationwide to improve driver skills.
Volvo Axle Bracket Fork 250213900
Price: $198.55
Weight: 25 lbs
The new Hendrickson STEERTEK AXLES doesn’t allow use of forks on the axle itself. See Hendickson Technical Bulletin below. Freightliner as well as Vovlo trucks use the new axle and school busses will be equipped with same axle from July 2003.
Next year most trucks will have this type of axle and can only be lifted by the lower axle wraps. Towing the vehicle by the axle will cause scarring and resultant damage to the axle and void warranty.

The new 4″ bus and tube fork is designed to lift at the 4″ torsion tube on the newer MCI and other busses. This fork is also used to lift trucks with tail gate lifts.

Spring Fork Lock Pin 250240200 [ used with the Spring Fork #82200814 ]
Price: $51.70
The self aligning spring fork is one of the most popular forks and attaches to the spring itself. Four different positions for the fork lock pin ensure a snug fit. The fork hinging feature permits alignment with the spring during lift. The spring hangers are always located up front or close to the bumper. This will decrease the load on the tow truck’s axle, i.e. the closer you can pull in the towed vehicle the less weight on your rear axles. Always secure the towed vehicle with safety chains on both sides before towing. Make sure the chains are damage free and have the correct grade and size.
